Historiography of Congo Reform

At the beginning of my research on the Congo, I had been taken with Hochschild’s notion that the story of the Congo Free State and its demise was largely unknown when his 1998 book came out. From a popular perspective, this was largely true; in fact, the Congo had to be rediscovered in waves over the years by new generations in places like Britain and the United States. Continue reading
